Side trip from Aulani in search of some dolphins
We’ve visited Aulani 3 times prior to this trip in February of 2019 and have always wanted to take a side trip to go see the dolphins, but decided against it. We were thinking that the kids were way too young. They won’t remember the experience. It’d be difficult carrying them around on a boat and such, but now that Little Mahina has turned 6 and Baby Haku is 4, we threw away their baby strollers, burned their baby carriers and commanded them to walk on-board the Dolphin Star.
Plenty to do on-board with the kids and free snacks
First thing we did after checking-in at Aulani was to head to the Holoholo tour desk (next to Aulani’s check-in counter) and reserved a spot on this excursion. DVC members take note. You get a $25 discount when you show your DVC member card. When reserving this excursion, you get the options of choosing transportation to the harbor, snorkeling and a burger lunch. We said no to all of them because we are cheap. To our surprise, Dolphin Star offered free snacks (chips and brownies), so the Rat family didn’t have to feast on other boat goers leftover burgers! For more information on pricing, visit their website here. Also, we were kinda worried about our kids getting restless when the boat was out searching for dolphins. Don’t worry about that Ratketeers. Dolphin Star has thought about that too. The crew was prepared with some educational activities that entertained the kids until the dolphins decided to show themselves.
The crew and the view were exceptional
The crew on Dolphin star was amazing. They knew a ton about marine animals and I certainly learned a lot from them. Did you know that dolphins swim even when they are asleep? What the #&*%?! How does that happen? The only thing I do when I sleep is annoy my wife with occasional farts. Anyways, after a bit, it was time for us to head to the back of the boat and my God, the view was exceptional.
After enjoying the view for a bit, the stars of the show decided to show and there was a lot of them! It was a beautiful sight. Wife-chan was super excited, the kids were super excited and just looking at my family with them big smiles on their faces warmed my heart. It was an experience that I’d never forget. You can watch some videos of the dolphins below and in those videos, the crew confirmed that they were sleeping. Turn the volume up and you might here a fart or two in those videos too. Yes Ratketeers, I let em rip even when I’m not asleep. Enjoy!
If you are visiting Oahu and would like to see some wild dolphins without getting wet, I highly recommend this experience. Dolphin Star guarantees that you will see dolphins and if you don’t, they’ll give you a free ticket for future use, so I recommend you do this early on your trip. According to the crew, there’s a really high hit rate and we got to see them on our first try, but just in case you don’t, you know you got some form of insurance there. The next time we visit Aulani, we will definitely be doing this again!
