Good cheap food 15 minutes from Aulani!
In November of 2017, the Rat family took a 2 weeks trip to Aulani. For the whole of those 2 weeks, we rented a car and mainly explored the area near Aulani. My main goal for that trip was to enjoy the resort in itself and to find good cheap food around the resort. By "around the resort" I mean a driving duration of no more than 15 minutes from the parking lot of Aulani to the dining destination, and by "cheap" I mean meals that cost below $15 per person. Got it Ratketeer? 15 minutes drive, $15 meals, let's go!
You won't even need a car for this one. Just cross the street from Aulani and voila, you are there. Island Country Markets sells everything that you will need for your trip. Chips, fruits, ice cream, Hawaiian Aloha shirts and more. They also sell freshly cooked food like steaks and burgers. My personal favorites in this store are the Toasted Mr Reuben, poke and Pineapple Dole Whip which you can serve up yourself using their machine!
Ratketeer, if you only have one day in Aulani... just one day... drive your behind to Grinds 2 Da Max and get yourself a Dynamite Katsu Plate. You won't regret it! I still dream about this one from time to time. Grinds 2 Da Max serves up sexy food and there's something for everyone. You want seafood? They have it. You want beef? They have it. Something light tasting and refreshing? They have it. Something DYNAMITE?! They definitely have it. It's called the Dynamite Katsu Plate! Be prepared for that sauce to blow you away! A must-eat when visiting Aulani.
Thai Lao Restaurant is known for two dishes. Pad Ki Mao aka Drunkard Noodles and Evil Jungle Curry. If you are a spice lover, like me, you cannot go wrong with Pad Ki Mao. I freaking loved this dish. When I say spicy, I mean spicy. Pad Ki Mao is only for seasoned spicy food lovers. It's my favorite dish in Thai Lao Restaurant. Fancy something less spicy? Try the Evil Jungle Curry. The name sounds scary spicy, but it's actually not. Evil Jungle Curry is filled with coconuty goodness. Drench your rice with this curry to experience heaven.
Crab for $15?! That's right! We ordered the King Crab Legs' Combo from Da Crawfish & Crab Shack and the total price was $60. Divide that by the 4 of us and voila, that's $15 per person. Twice on this trip, we actually ordered take-out from Da Crawfish & Crab Shack, went back to our room in Aulani and enjoyed our meal in the comforts of our room. $60 got us all really satisfied and full. After our meal, it was two steps to bed and hello dreamland. A perfect way to welcome the ZZZ monster!
Number 5, 6 and 7 are old favorites of the Rat Family. For this recent trip to Aulani, we visited those places again and guess what? They are still awesome. Click on the link to read more about them. As some of the places that I recommend on this list are food trucks, do check with Yelp for their current addresses. For your convenience, I've added Yelp links to this blog post and the links for number 5, 6 and 7 have been updated. Hope you guys enjoyed this read. Till next time, Honorable Rat out!
