Craving for dim sum while you explore Universal Studios Singapore?
There are many places to enjoy dim sum when visiting the island of Sentosa. There's the ever so popular Din Tai Fung, the upscale Feng Shui Inn, the elegant Cassia and more. All of them are really good, but the experience can get quite expensive. If you are looking for good dim sum on a budget, there's no better place to go to than Crystal Jade Jiang Nan in the neighboring shopping mall, Vivocity.
When is the best time to visit?
The best time to visit Crystal Jade Jiang Nan is from 3pm to 5pm. Get a hand-stamp and exit the park for a bit to fill your tummy with delicious dim sum! From 3pm to 5pm, Crystal Jade Jiang Nan has a special tea time special. Click here to find out more about this promotion. Also, it's not as crowded as lunch or dinner. A win-win situation!
What dishes should I order?
In Japan, when we think dim sum, we think of Xiao Long Bao or Siew Mai or Bao, but there's much more to dim sum. There are more than 100 dim sum dishes in the world and Crystal Jade Jiang Nan sells most of the favorites at affordable prices! Seeing that there are so many dishes to dim sum, which ones should you choose? Here are my top ten dim sum dishes in Crystal Jade Jiang Nan.
1) Steamed Shanghai Xiao Long Bao
Let's kick this list off with something we are all accustomed to. The Steamed Shanghai Xiao Long Bao! Poke a small hole in the skin and suck all that juicy amazing soup before you devour it whole. Its skin is so smooth and thin making it so easy to eat!
2) Steamed Chili Crab Xiao Long Bao
Looking for something more Singaporean? You can't go wrong with the Chili Crab Xiao Long Bao. That sweet flavor of the sauce along with that tad bit of spiciness will definitely bring out the essence of this local favorite. A bite-sized version of Singapore's national dish.
3) Pork Dumplings with Hot Chili Vinaigrette
Another bite-sized dish that will explode with flavor in your mouth. The sauce for this is just amazing. It complements the Pork Dumplings so well. Be prepared for the juice of the pork to capture your taste buds.
4) Deep-Fried Crispy Beancurd Skin Roll with Shrimp & Minced Pork
The texture of this will blow your mind. The skin of the beancurd adds a totally different dimension to this dish. Crispy on the outside, soft and juicy on the inside. My mouth is watering just thinking about this dish. Time to book a flight back home to Singapore!
5) Pan-Fried Pancake with Scallion & Pork Floss
One of the best Indian dishes in Singapore is Roti Prata. I can eat that for breakfast, lunch and dinner. My excitement flew through the roof when I saw this on Crystal Jade Jiang Nan's menu. A Chinese dim sum restaurant that serves up prata!? A mix and mesh of two different cultures in one dish and it is amazing! Ruchiyana - Hern Hao Zhi. That's Tamil and Mandarin for delicious!
6) Deep-Fried Whitebait in Wuxi Style
Whitebait is a favorite with many Japanese. There's whitebait anything in Kamakura. Whitebait on rice, whitebait on bread and even whitebait pizza. This version of whitebait does not require for you to add it to anything. It's delicious on its own. Sweet, salty, sour and crunchy. A burst of different flavors!
7) Deep-Fried Fish Skin Coated with Salted Egg Yolk
In Japan, we are not accustomed to eating salted egg. Salted egg is basically preserved duck egg and it is amazing. In Singapore, salted egg is used in a lot of dishes and this is one of my favorite Salted egg infused dishes. The crispiness of the deep-fried fish skin along with its natural flavor of the sea along with the saltiness of the salted egg yolk will take you on an unfamiliar culinary adventure that is super rewarding.
8) La Mian with Braised Beef Brisket
The cousin of Japanese ramen, this dish is filled with so much flavor. So far, every dish in this list is either seafood or pork. Let's change it up with some beef shall we? The beef broth is simply breathtaking and the beef served up with this heavenly bowl of noodles is oh so tender. No chewing required. Just put it in your mouth and let it melt away!
9) Sauteed Kailan with Assorted Mushroom & Fungus
I don't know about you, but all these meat dishes are making me crave for some vegetables. If you would like to add some balance to your meal, there's no better dish in Crystal Jade Jiang Nan than this. Crunchy vegetables with juicy mushrooms. This will add some delicious greens into your system.
10) Steamed Salted Egg Yolk Custard Bun
Last, but not least we have the Steamed Salted Egg Yolk Custard Bun. A great way to end any Yum Cha meal. It's sweet, salty and rich with flavor. Be careful though. This is one dish that I crave for a lot when returning to Japan. It is plain addictive. A must-get when visiting Crystal Jade Jiang Nan. A perfect way to end your Yum Cha adventure!
