Ameyoko Market is amazing. Hands down, the best place in Tokyo to find good, cheap street food. Ameyoko Market is lined with street food vendors selling everything from Japanese rice bowls to cut fruit on a stick. For those living in Tokyo, it's also a great place to go grocery shopping. They got everything from fresh seafood to Halal meat. You can find spices from around the world here. Busy, noisy and not prettied up like a lot of places in Tokyo. Reminds me a lot of the Singapore that I grew up in. This is the real deal.
I'm currently working on two videos that will be uploaded next week which will show you more of what Ameyoko Market has to offer. One of the videos will feature the best place in Tokyo to get souvenirs from. Why is it the best? Here's a simple reason. It's cheap. The cheapest I've seen so far from my travels in Tokyo. For this blog post, I'll be reviewing the Karinto Manju that can be found in Kanda Daruma. Kanda Daruma is located in Ameyoko Market, Ueno. It sells Taiyaki, Karinto Manju and soft serve ice cream. It's main product is the Taiyaki, but for Honorable Snack Run #2, I got myself a Karinto Manju with Red Bean Paste for 120 yen.
So, what is Karinto Manju? Karinto Manju is basically a biscuit-like shell with fillings that's deep fried. This shell is made out of flour, yeast and brown sugar. In the shell, you can find different types of pasty fillings. Kanda Daruma sells two types of Karinto Manju. Red bean paste and sweet potato paste.
First off, I'd like to get something off my chest. "I f?#$%n love Ameyoko Market!" In the last blog post, I had the best Octopus Balls that I've ever encountered in Tokyo. And now, I'm gonna have to say that this is one of the best sweets that I've had in my life! The Karinto Manju with Red Bean Paste had a shell that was heavenly to bite into. It was super crisp. I could hear the crackle when I bit into it. The red bean paste didn't have bits and pieces of red bean in it. Just the way I like it. It was so so smooth and provided that gradual increase in sweetness to my palate. A great bite-sized dessert that is incredible in texture, light and sweet. A perfect way to end any meal.
